JESUIT HIGHER EDUCATION ASSOCIATION
SOUTH ASIA
(JHEASA)
CONFERENCE SECRETARIAT FOR HIGHER EDUCATION
(CSHE)
About The Association

Rev. Fr. Jerome Stanislaus D'Souza SJ
President of the South Asian Conference (POSA)
The first ever Higher Education Institution of the Jesuits was set up in Goa (1540) by St. Francis Xavier, one of the founding fathers of the Society of Jesus. It was, however, only in 1961 that the ‘Jesuit Educational Association of India’ [JEA] was constituted by the conference of Major Superiors (Bombay, October 1961) and registered as a society. However when the conference of major Superiors itself became a registered society [Jesuit Conference of India] the JEA merged into the JCI as its ‘Education Section’.
JHEASA coordinates all the higher education institutions – Universities, Colleges, Institutes and Centres – in their mission of forming men and women for and with others.
JHEASA functions in its collaboration and networking at four zonal levels.
JHEASA aims to transform all JHEASA institutions as discerning organizations, with Ignatian tradition and heritage.
Mission & Purpose
To promote the welfare of Jesuit Higher Education Institutions and of all persons concerned with them; to strive especially to give a social, moral and spiritual orientation to Jesuit higher education work and to foster among Jesuits and lay staff alike an Ignatian vision of education, and to produce men and women for others. Through its member institutions, to make its own contribution towards the transformation of present day socio-cultural conditions, so that the principles of social justice, equality of opportunity, genuine freedom and respect for religious and moral values, enshrined in the Constitution of India, may prevail, and the possibility of living a fully human existence may be open to all.
About : Jesuit Higher Education in South Asia (JHEASA)
With the advent of changes in the educational sectors vis-à-vis a globalizing world, a spurt in new higher educational institutions was seen in this century in South Asia. With this, the need to establish an autonomous association for Higher Education was expressed, and hence Jesuit Higher Education Association South Asia (JHEASA) was mooted and the Jesuit Conference of South Asia (JCSA) approved the setting up of a New Secretariat for Higher Education in their meeting in October 2008 at Patna. The JCSA deliberated on the Constitution in their Meeting in March 2009 at Pune.
Intellectual Apostolate influenced and enhanced our capability to serve the Church and secular culture. Serious intellectual work and reflection will impact on our global capacity to give the level of excellence that evangelization needs today. Hence JHEASA will comprise all the Institutions of Higher Education. That will include the Graduate, Post Graduate Colleges and Research Centres; Colleges of Education, Management and Business Administration, Engineering, Law and other Professional Institutions; and Theologates and Philosophates.
Right now, there are 62 Degree awarding Jesuit Higher Education Institutions and 13 Research Institutions in JHEASA. Annual Conference of Principals and Directors of Jesuits Higher Education Institutions (JHEIs) is held every year to deliberate on the current issues of Higher Education in South Asia as well as the priorities of International Association of Jesuit Universities (IAJU). Last annual Conference of JHEASA was held at St Xavier’s College, Kolkata on October 6-7, 2019.
